medication related incontinence

There are many illnesses and conditions which can cause a person to suffer from incontinence, varying from severe to mild cases. However, there is also medication related incontinence where certain medications can cause difficulties as well. Some of these medications act in a way that affects how the body produces and eliminates urine, in turn causing many people to suffer from issues with incontinence.

There are common drug classes which are associated with incontinence including, but not limited to, diuretics, certain hypertension drugs, and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. There are others as well which can cause some people to suffer from incontinence, which will be discussed below.

Diuretics Perhaps the most common drug that causes issues for most people are diuretics, such as Lasix. These drugs are commonly referred to as water pills because they actually work to elevate the rate of urination (diuresis). Since they are working to increase the excretion of water from the body, they often can cause incontinence, especially in older people who have weaker muscles and others who already have impaired continence.

Sedatives (sleeping pills), Hypnotic CNS Depressants, and Benzodiazepines (especially ones such as flurazepam and diazepam (Valium)) – These drugs can build up in the bloodstream of older people leading to confusion altering their ability to recognize when they need to void, leading to urinary tract infections and incontinence.

Anticholinergic agents: Antihistamines, Antidepressants (TCA), Phenothiazines,
Disopyramides, Opiates, Antispasmodics, Parkinson drugs, Alpha-adrenergic agents People suffering from insomnia, pruritus (itchy skin), vertigo (dizziness) as well as other conditions, often take prescription or over-the-counter drugs with anticholinergic properties. One of the common side effects is urinary retention with increased urinary frequency and overflow incontinence.

Calcium channel blockers (Heart and blood pressure medications) These drugs can cause the smooth muscle contractility in the bladder to weaken sometimes leading to urinary retention and overflow incontinence.

Alpha-adrenergic agents (high blood pressure drugs) and Sympathomimetics (decongestants), Sympatholytics (e.g., prazosin, terazosin, and doxazosin) Alpha-agonists can cause symptoms of urinary retention in older men, while women prescribed alpha-antagonists for hypertension can suffer from symptoms of stress incontinence. Urinary retention and overflow incontinence may occur in older men with an enlarged prostate when they take multi-component cold capsules containing alpha-agonists and antichoinergic agents. This is especially a concern if a nasal decongestant and over-the-counter hypnotic antihistamine are taken as well.

Alcohol Although not a medication, it is important to recognize alcohol as a potential cause of urinary incontinence as well. Alcohol can alter memory, impair mobility, leading to increased urine output that can lead to incontinence. Not only that, it also acts as a sedative which can alter a persons ability to recognize when they have a need to void.

Many medications will have side effects which can lead indirectly to leakage or incontinence issues, so it is important to research any medication you are taking if you have concerns. Medication related incontinence is something that is not permanent, and can be dealt with either by changing medications or simply being aware of the potential for problems, and learning how to adapt your lifestyle to accommodate any incontinence concerns.

Preventative Care and Energetic Healing for Your Dog

Each week, we invite a different intuitive to answer a question from a reader. If you'd like to submit a question for Rose please email her directly.

Free Advice from Animal Reiki Shaman, Rose De Dan

doggie exam Dear Rose, Gigi, my black doggy has had a very bad cough since November. They gave her meds at the vet, but no change. I can't afford to pay $300 now to cure her. Could it be that she needs her annual shots, which she hasn't had yet? She has no heartworms. Please! Help, I love her so much. Thank you kindly.

luv, Sue

Dear Susan, I am sorry to hear that Gigi is still suffering with a bad cough. I do understand how challenging and worrying it can be to watch a loved one suffer and not be able to afford the cost of treatment.

To assist Gigi in future you might consider purchasing pet insurance to help with future vet bills. Best Friends Animal Society just introduced a pet insurance plan that not only protects your animal companion's health, but also helps support their efforts to insure a brighter future for homeless animals.

I am very glad to hear that Gigi does not have heartworm. There are many other possible causes for the cough, and veterinary treatment would require a diagnosis, something I am not qualified to do.

Just as a vet would do a thorough workup in order to arrive at a course of treatment, my own clients undergo a formal intake for an individual session, which is outside the scope of this column.

Speaking generally, Gigi may have an imbalance in her energy field related to her chest/lungs which could potentially be addressed by the use of acupuncture, Reiki, shamanic or other energy modalities, but I would be hesitant to pursue that course of action without including veterinary support.

If you do want to add energetic healing to the mix and cost is an issue you might consider taking a Reiki Level I class. It is a low cost solution for a lifetime of benefits for Gigi and yourself, or perhaps you have a friend who has taken a class who might be willing to offer his/her services.

You asked if Gigi could have the cough because of being overdue for her annual vaccination. Vaccinations are intended to prevent contraction of an infectious disease, they are never used as a cure--vaccination would not offer any benefit to Gigi currently. And since she is currently ill, updating her vaccinations at this time may actually do more harm than good.

Since you mention a yearly schedule of vaccinations I am concerned that Gigi may be at risk for over-vaccination. Many people and many vets are unaware that the protocol on annual vaccinations has changed. For three decades veterinary immunologists have been stating that annual vaccination is unnecessary. In Spring of 2003 the American Animal Hospital Association Canine Vaccine Task Force released its vaccination guidelines, recommending consideration of a three-year protocol rather than yearly. Holistic vets go even further, suggesting that repeated vaccination for the same disease has the potential to cause allergic reactions, hyperthyroid disease, autoimmune diseases, cancer, kidney failure, seizures and more.

For more information and guidelines on when to vaccinate your dog check out To vaccinate or not to vaccinate - that is the question! by veterinary acupuncturist Dr. Lena McCullough.

My very best wishes to you and Gigi for a successful resolution and a bright and healthy future together.

Get Bikini Ready With Yoga

Click to enter our WEBSHOP to buy related products!

by B. Chancey on May 13th, 2011 at 7:00 am

Get bikin ready1 300x198 Get Bikini Ready with Yoga Everyone wants to look their best in the summertime – after all, tis the season to show a little skin! The target areas for bikini season are the abdominals, thighs and buttocks. These three areas, which sometimes see minimal sunlight, are suddenly out in the open when bikini season approaches. Luckily, there are 3 yoga poses that can help you feel good about putting on a bikini and stepping out on the beach.

Mold your Midsection

Plank pose is wonderful for the abs; just add a little twist and you could be bikini ready in a matter of weeks. While is plank, lift your left leg up towards your chest and hold for 5 breaths, when complete pull yourself into downward dog to rest and repeat on the opposite side.

The goal of this pose is to strengthen your ab muscles. The trick to this pose is to not put too much pressure on your lower back. In fact, if you need to, round your back a little while you hold your breath. The bonus to this move is it also tones and strengthens your arms along with your midsection.

Transform your Thighs

Warrior pose is a great way to shape those thighs, and get them bikini ready.  Work your upper body and your lower body at the same time by adding a slight backward bend to you Warrior pose. Raise your arms above your head and interlace your fingers. While lunging into Warrior, slowly bend backward, look up at the ceiling and hold this pose for 5 breaths.

The goal of this pose is to strengthen the legs while stretching the torso allowing for a full body workout in a matter of breaths. When lunging back try to keep your shoulders down and not up towards the ears, this will help you to not pull any muscles in the shoulder area. The bonus to this pose is it works all the muscles in your legs along with the abs.

Revamp your Rump

Buttocks postures can really make your bikini fit perfectly, and make you feel comfortable while walking on the beach. Chair pose is a great posture for the buttocks. When you begin chair pose, make sure your arms are raised and either above your head or straight in front of you. Bend your knees, keep your back straight just like you sitting in a chair and hold for 5 breaths. For an added “oomph” raise your heels off the ground and stay as long as you can on your tiptoes.

The goal of this pose is to work the buttocks while also working your thighs, and if you so choose to lift your heels, your calves as well. The bonus to this pose is that it actually raises your heart rate and therefore is great for cardiovascular system.

No matter what your skill level with yoga, these three poses can help you transform your body and get ready for your bikini!

The Health Benefits of Oil Pulling

Click to enter our WEBSHOP to buy related products!

Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic remedy for oral health and detoxification. It involves the use of pure oils as agents for pulling harmful bacteria, fungus and other organisms out of the mouth, teeth, gums and even throat.

Oil Pulling Benefits

The most effective oil pulling is done by placing around a tablespoon of cold pressed organic sesame oil into the mouth and swishing the oil around the mouth for approximately 10-15 minutes and then spitting it out.

Other oils such as extra virgin cold pressed coconut, sunflower and olive oil have been used, although sesame oil is considered one of the best oils for this practice. I recommend alternating oils every couple of days to get the full benefit. Putting high quality organic oils into the mouth has a multi-effect outcome.

Firstly, the oils mix with the saliva, turning it into a thin, white liquid. Lipids in the oils begin to pull out toxins from the saliva of the mouth. As you swish the oil around the mouth, teeth, gums and tongue, the oil continues to absorb toxins, and usually ends up turning thick and viscous and white. Once the oil has reached this consistency, it is spit out before the toxins are reabsorbed into the body.

Multiple scientific studies show the efficacy of oil pulling therapy. One study shows that oil pulling with sesame oil can boost overall oral health. Specifically, using sesame oil as an oral health agent helps to reduce the amount of S. mutans (germ) count in both teeth plaque and mouth saliva. Scientists believe that the lipids in the oil both pull out bacteria, as well as stop bacterial from sticking to the walls of the oral cavity.

Oil pulling may also increase saponification in the mouth, creating a soapy environment that cleanses the mouth as vegetable fat is an emulsifier by nature. Most interesting is perhaps the ability of oil to cleanse out harmful bacteria, as well as reduce fungal overgrowth. These oils also possibly help in cellular restructuring, and are related to the proper functioning of the lymph nodes and other internal organs.

Other possible benefits of oil pulling for oral health include:

Overall strengthening of the teeth and gums and jaws.Prevention of diseases of the gums and mouth, such as cavities and gingivitis.Prevention of overall tooth decayPrevention for bad breathPotential holistic remedy for bleeding gumsPrevention of dryness of the lips, mouth and throat.Possible holistic treatment for TMJ and general soreness in the jaw area.

Believe it or not, ancient Ayurvedic health practitioners believed that oil pulling could reduce more than just diseases of the mouth and throat. Today, many holistic practitioners tout its use for a variety of health concerns. It is believed that these oils help the lymphatic system of the body as harmful bacteria are removed and beneficial microflora are given with a healthy environment to flourish. Because of this holistic perspective, oil pulling has been used as a preventative health measure for many other conditions.

Other possible benefits of oil pulling for overall health include:

Oil Pulling

Migraine headache reliefCorrecting hormone imbalancesReducing inflammation of arthritisMay help with gastro-enteritisAids in the reduction of eczemaMay reduce symptoms of bronchitisHelps support normal kidney functionMay help reduce sinus congestionSome people report improved visionHelps reduce insomniaReduced hangover after alcohol consumptionAids in reducing painReduces the symptoms of allergiesHelps detoxify the body of harmful metals and organisms

Obviously, more research is needed to conclusively determine whether or not these benefits can be associated with Oil Pulling.

Sesame oil is particularly high in the antioxidants sesamol, sesamin, and sesamolin. It also holds a high concentration of Vitamin E and polyunsaturated fatty acids. These antioxidants have been found to stop the absorption of negative forms of cholesterol in the liver. Multiple studies have shown the antibacterial capacities of sesame oil. These studies support the use of oil pulling in the prevention of dental cavities and gingivitis.

A 2007 study (PDF) looking into the effect of oil pulling (with sunflower oil) on plaque and gingivitis on oral soft and hard tissues. Results found that after 45 days of oil pulling, subjects showed a statistically significant reduction in gingivitis.

Another study (PDF), conducted in 2008 found a “remarkable reduction in the total count of bacteria” in the mouth, and an overall marked reduction in susceptibility dental cavities. The antibacterial activity of sesame oil was also studied and found to have an effect on the Streptococcus mutans in the mouth. In fact, these studies showed an overall reduction of bacteria from 10 to 33.4% in participants, and after 40 days of oil-pulling, participants were found to show 20% in average reduction in oral bacteria. Moreover, half of all participants in this case study showed a drastic reduction in susceptibility to dental caries.

Have you ever tried oil pulling? If so, please share your experience in the comments below.

Vitamin D and Obesity in Children

Click to enter our WEBSHOP to buy related products!

A few months back, the University of Michigan School of Public Health published the results of research that suggests that inadequate levels of vitamin D could be a key factor in increased fat accumulation in children, and could be an important weapon in the fight against childhood obesity.

Vitamin D and Obesity

According to their findings, there is a strong correlation between vitamin D deficiency and the rapid build-up of abdominal body fat. This specific type of fat is often associated with an increased risk of heart disease, type-2 diabetes, as well as numerous other serious medical concerns.

In order to better understand the link between these two factors, researchers first measured the vitamin D blood serum levels of 479 children, ages 5 to 12, living in Bogota, Columbia, and then monitored their weight gain for a 30-month period. Due to the inherent shortcomings with relying solely on the body mass index standard of gauging body fat, the researchers opted to use a three-prong approach which took into consideration not only BMI, but also waist circumference and a more advanced technique know as the subscapular-to-tricep skinfold ratio.

They found that those children with the lowest levels of vitamin D at the beginning of the study gained weight more quickly, and more body fat overall as compared to their less deficient peers.

The researchers also noted lower than average increases in height among girls with low levels of vitamin D. This latter observation was not however found in members of the male sub-population.

Global obesity rates have climbed steadily in recent decades — particularly among young people. Less obvious, but of equal concern to many medical professionals, is a similar increase in vitamin D deficiency in children.

Epidemiologist Eduardo Villamor, senior author of the study: “We found that the kids with the lowest vitamin D levels at the beginning tended to gain weight faster than the kids with higher levels.. Our findings suggest that low vitamin D status may put children at risk of obesity. This is significant because vitamin D insufficiency is highly prevalent across the globe and childhood obesity rates are dramatically increasing worldwide.” [1]

Vitamin D is naturally produced by the human body in response to sun exposure. Traditionally, it has been believed that people living in sunnier climates would naturally maintain healthy levels of vitamin D as a byproduct of their surroundings. Closer investigation, however, has repeatedly shown this theory to be flawed. And the substantial lack of vitamin D documented among children living in sunny Bogota serves to only further underscore the need to better understand the depths of this misconception.

There is an increasing push within the greater medical community to revise the official intake recommendation for vitamin D in response to this and other health concerns to which low blood levels of vitamin D have been linked. The current recommendation was increased to 200 IU per day for healthy adults in 1997. On November 30, 2010, the Institute of Medicine increased that recommendation to 600 IU per day, but many people still support drastically raising that recommendation, including the Vitamin D Council.

Because food-based sources of vitamin D are limited, and regular exposure to sunshine appears to be insufficient, the use of dietary supplements to ensure proper intake has become increasingly popular. And if low levels of vitamin D are in fact contributing to the worldwide childhood and possibly adult obesity problem, then something as simple as an over-the-counter vitamin could potentially save millions of lives in the long run. I personally use and recommend D3 serum taken at least 2x weekly.

ive got really bad anxiety, and so far the onlt thing thats really helped it thats totally natural is marijuana, but i cant always get it cuz im 14 and i dont always have the money, so i was just wondering if anyone knew any cheap effective natural remedies, thanks!

Cutting caffeine and sugar will help, but doing some moderate exercise (walking, jogging, etc) can help quite a bit as well.
If you would like some added help, there are some natural products for stress and anxiety. Some of the most popular are GABA, L-Theanine, Rhodiola Rosea, 5-HTP, and L-Tryptophan.

Baby on Board? – Natural Ways to Get Pregnant

Click to enter our WEBSHOP to buy related products!

by B. Chancey on May 12th, 2011 at 7:00 am

Baby on board1 201x300 Baby on Board? – Natural ways to get pregnant Infertility is the inability to conceive a child within the first year of trying, so while you think you may be infertile, if you are still within a year of trying to conceive, you may not be. Speaking to your doctor is an imperative course of action, but even if the results come back not in you or your partners favor, there are natural ways to help.

Infertility affects many couples and though it’s common, it’s not something they may want to talk about freely. In fact, many couples tend to not even seek professional help for their fertility issues. On average 2.1 million couples face infertility, and while 30-50 percent of infertility is due to the male’s reproductive system, a whopping 50-70 percent of the time it’s due to the woman’s reproductive system.

Some couples start to feel as if they are doomed to failure so they stop being intimate with each other and stop trying to reproduce. Men in particular may have feelings of emasculation and or their letting their partner down. Women will sometimes become very emotional about the fact they cannot conceive and start to feel like a failure for her partner.

Although these feelings are common, they aren’t necessarily valid either, nor will they solve the problem. In-fact you may be closer to fertility than you think, it could be as easy as changing your diet and having intercourse at different times during the month.

For Women

A Weighty Issue

Twelve percent of all infertility issues are because a woman weighs too much. Overweight women don’t ovulate properly, making it impossible to conceive. Dropping as little as 5% of your weight, can drastically improve your chances of getting pregnant.

Keep Moving

Staying fit is another reason why you may not be pregnant. Many times women stop working out as to not hurt their chances of getting and “staying” pregnant, but the fact is, exercise can help you cope with emotional stressors you may be feeling as you try and conceive.

Slow it Down

Keeping still for 5-10 minutes after intercourse can help you conceive by allowing your partners sperm to stay where it should. Even though most women have been told to get up immediately and go to the restroom after having sex to avoid infection, this isn’t true for those trying to get pregnant.

Say No to Soy

Women trying to get pregnant should lay off the soy products like tofu and soy milk. Soy contains plant estrogens that compete with natural estrogen, throwing off your ovulation schedule.

For Men

Take em’ Off

You may have heard this one before but it is true. Men who wear briefs should consider switching to boxers. Even though men may be quite partial to their briefs, they restrict the air flow through the testicles thus decreasing the ability for sperm to fertilize an egg.

Cool Down

Staying out of hot tubs is imperative for healthy sperm production. The hot water kills sperm in the testes, however steam rooms are ok.

Even though it may seem a little unfair that men have fewer restrictions than women, practicing both tips may ensure fertility. Also, be sure to ask your doctor if there are any other fertility tips he/she can give you.

Fertile XX™ Promotes effective female reproductive system support for fertility

Fertile XY™ Supports male reproductive system health and normal testosterone levels

By Al Sears, MD Most of the “advice” I see on Dr. Oz and Oprah , in Women’s Health and in the New York Times Magazine on Sunday seem to center on the same things. What advice are you taking? These reports I’ve been seeing lately give women advice like suggesting you eat fake, processed “health” foods like flaxseed. But they’re unnatural to your body. People used to wear flax, not eat it.

Many women complain about morning sickness in their first trimester of pregnancy. Morning sickness can be nausea or lead to vomiting. In the vast majority of cases this isnt dangerous, just unpleasant. In rare cases the woman may vomit so severely that they become dehydrated.

Morning sickness is also a bit of a misnomer since the nausea or vomiting can happen at any time of the day. This is one reason why some women try Nexium morning sickness relief.

The exact cause isnt known but researchers believe that its linked to your bodys response to the new hormones associated with pregnancy. Blood tests have shown that women who have morning sickness also tend to have higher levels of hormones than those women who dont. Research has also found that women who do suffer from morning sickness also have a lower rate of miscarriage and that women who develop nausea from birth control pills will also develop morning sickness.

Nexium morning sickness relief isnt your best first option. There are several home remedies for morning sickness that many women have found relief using.
Before getting out of bed in the morning eat several dry saltine crackers and lay in bed for 10 minutes to allow your body to adjust to being awake without being up.
Eat six small meals a day. Dont eat three big meals and stretch the stomach. Another option is to graze throughout the day.
Keep saltines with you because you dont want your stomach to ever get completely empty.
Keep yourself hydrated. If you are vomiting drink water in small sips during times when you are keeping food and water down.
Eat foods that are bland and without spices. Even if they look good to your eyes they may not feel good in the stomach. Stay away from salt and pepper and any other salty foods. And avoid rich and fatty foods that take longer for your stomach to digest.
Use prenatal vitamins without the iron or switch brands to see if the symptoms grow milder or disappear.
Avoid smells dont cook, dont go into restaurants that have a lot of odor.
Eat sweets only sparingly.

Nexium for morning sickness

Nexium morning sickness relief is recommended only when there are no other options that are working and relief is clearly needed. Morning sickness is uncomfortable and hard to live through but it isnt life threatening and doesnt require too much intervention unless the condition is causing dehydration and significant weight loss.

Medications that are used during pregnancy are placed into specific categories based on the effect the drug can potentially have on the unborn child. The categories range from A through X. Nexium is in Category B. Animal studies of Nexium during pregnancy of animals havent shown any adverse affect on the babies but animal studies in pregnancy dont translate well into human subjects. And, there have been no well-controlled studies done in pregnant women.

For these reasons the drug company advises : Because animal reproduction studies are not always predictive of human response, this drug should be used
during pregnancy only if clearly needed.

Thankfully, morning sickness usually dissipates by the 12th week of pregnancy in 50% of sufferers and in 90% by the end of the fourth month. Discuss the use of Nexium morning sickness option with your physician before considering this choice. Never take someone elses medication and dont take anything without first consulting your doctor. You control the health and future of your child with every medication you take.

I Love Oralive Natural Vegan Toothpaste

Click to enter our WEBSHOP to buy related products!

oralive toothpasteI recently discovered a new holistic dental care product that I simply have to share with my readers. It may seem odd to love a toothpaste that looks like and has the texture of mud, but I do. Oralive doesn't create a fun foaming experience in my mouth, nor could I honestly tell you that it tastes spectacular. It has a minty-earthy flavor that is okay. When the muddy paste is activated with your saliva it creates a greenish goo. Sadly, when I'm brushing my teeth the goo will sometimes drip down the corner of my mouth. If drooling occurs I will attempt to shove the drool back into my mouth with my finger. Why not just wipe it away? Because Oralive Dental Regenerative Elixir is filled with so many wonderful healing ingredients that I don't want to waste even a drop of it.

This natural toothpaste is not meant to be spat out into the sink but rather swished inside your mouth to treat your gums and teeth. When you are done brushing your gums and teeth, simply swallow. When swallowed, Oralive acts as a superfood, calcium supplement, blood alkalizer, detoxifier and oxygenator.

Read my glowing review of Oralive.

Anxiety Disorder Treatments: The Best Herbal Remedies for Anxiety

If you enjoy this post, please share it using the buttons in the post, or email it to a friend, we'd really appreciate it!

by Tess Thompson

Anxiety disorders are the most common of all mental health disorders and affect the lives of millions of people every year, including approximately 19 million in the U.S. alone. If you are one of them, you may wonder if your symptoms are standard, and if there are behavioral and medical treatments that might be effective for you. While everyone experiences anxiety in some form — perhaps before giving a public presentation or in the midst of major life changes — those with anxiety disorders experience it unusally often and irrationally.

There are many different types of anxiety disorders, each of which have unique features, but all of them share the symptoms of dread and excessive fear. Five common types are panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, social anxiety disorder and generalized anxiety disorder. As with most disorders, each individual will experience symptoms slightly differently, and response to treatment will vary as well. While there are prescription medications for anxiety, for those who are wary of the side effects there also exist natural treatments for anxiety which contain herbal ingredients that can produce equally positive effects.

Passion flower (or Passiflora Incarnata) is a natural ingredient that is often used for anxiety relief, as well as to treat hyperactivity, insomnia, nervous tension and even Parkinson’s Disease. Passion flower helps to calm and soothe and is believed to be able to reduce nervous tremors and lower high blood pressure.

Anxiety Disorder Treatments: The Best Herbal Remedies for Anxiety

Lavendar (or Lavandula Augustifolia) is one of the most popular natural ingredients for treatment of a variety of conditions, including anxiety disorder. Lavendar is a general tonic for the nervous system and is well-known for it’s calming properties, making it among the most effective of natural panic attack treatments. The active ingredients in lavendar are tannins, flavinoids, coumarins, triterponoids and volatile oil.

Lemon Balm (or Melissa Officinalis) is a natural ingredient that is used as a resorative for the nervous system and also calms the digestive system and reduces blood pressure. Lemon Balm has also been used to treat Grave’s disease (hyperthyroidism), and to treat depression and insomnia.

There are no quick fixes for anxiety disorder and anxiety disorder treatments should usually focus heavily on behavioral therapy. No matter how many times you might hear that you “worry too much” or that you should relax, your symptoms are not character flaws but indications of a serious disorder that is not your fault. Anxiety disorder is caused by biological, physiological and genetic factors, and may make your life seem stressful and difficult. There are many others like you who have found effective treatment through therapy, medication, herbal remedies for anxiety or some combination of the aforementioned, and you too have the ability to overcome your disorder to lead a happier, healthier life.

Lack of Sleep Leads to Decline in Brain Function

by A. Grano on May 18th, 2011 at 7:00 am

Lack of Sleep Leads to Decline in Brain Function1 300x199 Lack of Sleep Leads to Decline in Brain FunctionWe all know that not getting enough sleep can impair functioning on a day-to-day level – but recent studies have shown for middle-aged adults who slept less than six hours had lowered scores on six various cognitive tests, including reasoning, vocabulary, and memory.

Further, the studies concluded that chronic short sleep increases the risk of developing other ailments due to the production of hormones and chemicals formed in the body from the deficit, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity. In addition, lack of sleep impacts emotional well-being, leading to deterioration of overall mind-body wellness.

Conclusions

One of the largest problems researchers saw across the study participants was overscheduling themselves and not creating a healthy work/life balance. However, experts agree sleep is a vital component to overall health, and must be regarded with the same attention as following a proper diet and being physically active. In addition to being restorative, proper sleep is required for proper body functioning, including brain health and performance.

Sleep tips for adults

Make sleep a priority. In addition, establish and maintain regular bedtime and wake-up time patterns, including weekends to help the brain’s natural circadian rhythmAvoid working or other stimulating activities prior to bedtimeEstablish relaxing bedtime rituals, such as taking a hot shower, reading a book or magazine, or listening to musicMaintain a healthy weight, as being overweight or obese also affects sleeping patterns

Home Massage Tips: Soothe and Relax Your Friends & Loved Ones

Click to enter our WEBSHOP to buy related products!

by Michele Carelse on May 26th, 2011 at 7:00 am

Home Massage Tips Soothe and Relax Your Friends Loved Ones1 200x300 Home Massage Tips: Soothe and Relax Your Friends & Loved OnesMassage has been a method of healing, soothing and connecting for centuries for one very simple reason: the human touch is powerful medicine. There’s something almost magical about human touch and a massage; in its simplest form, is structured touch therapy.

Researchers have proven that massage therapy provides several significant health benefits, including improved blood circulation, improved sleep, deep muscle relaxation and increased range of motion. Massage has also been shown to alter the body’s ‘chemical soup’ by stimulating the release of endorphins, our ‘feel good’ hormones.

In today’s frenetically paced society, stress is almost impossible to escape. As a result, our body’s stress (or “fight or flight”) response is constantly being activated to deal with daily stressors. A little bit of stress keeps us focused and alert but beyond a certain point, stress stops being helpful and starts wreaking havoc, causing significant damage to our health, our moods, our productivity levels, our relationships, and our quality of life.

Massage is proven to put the body back into a “rest and digest” response that allows it to regenerate itself, digest food, absorb nutrients and speed up the elimination of toxins. Breathing becomes deep. Heart rate slows down. Pain levels decrease. Anxiety loses its hold.

The beauty is that you don’t need to be a massage therapist to give a good massage. You can use these simple touch techniques at home to help soothe and relax your friends and loved ones…

Setting Up:

Use a comfortable (but not too soft) surface, whether it’s a mat on the floor, or a bed.Drape a sheet or towel over the surface to absorb any stray oil.Make sure your partner is warm by covering the areas not being massaged with a towel or blanket.Setting the scene in a dimly lit room with soothing music can create a nurturing atmosphere and enhance the experience. For a wonderfully indulgent massage you can use aromatherapy oils (oils distilled from aromatic plants). The intense aromas and potent therapeutic benefits of essential oils like Lavender, Clary sage, Geranium and Chamomile have been used for thousands of years to induce relaxation and ease muscular tension.Breathing is an important component of relaxation so encourage your loved one to breathe deeply throughout the massage.

A Simple Home Routine:

Due to stress and poor posture, the back and neck are major hot spots so we’ve included a simple home routine to help ease tension in these areas:

Position your loved one lying face down with his or her head turned to one side.Warm a little oil in your hands and apply to the back. Apply just enough to lubricate the skin without making it slippery.Start the massage at the lower back with broad sweeping strokes up the middle of the back along either side of the spine and into the neck. You can let your hands criss-cross over themselves at the hips. This stroke stimulates circulation and spreads the oil. Take care not to massage directly on the spine.Starting again at the lower back use your fingertips (keeping them together) to glide up the curve of the back and into the neck. Do this a few times, increasing your pressure with subsequent strokes.Finish the final stroke at the base of your partner’s neck and let your hands fan out across the shoulders. Curve your hands around the top of the shoulders and pull down gently towards the hips. This produces a lovely neck stretch. Repeat this sequence a few times. Then, starting at the sacral area, push your thumbs gently into the muscles on either side of the spine making small circular movements as you work your way up into the base of the neck. Now concentrate on the muscles of the neck and top of the shoulders by squeezing and kneading. Use your thumb to stroke from the shoulder to the base of the skull and back again. Do this several times on each side focusing on any areas of tension you might find.Finish the massage with several broad sweeping strokes from the neck down to the lower back and up again, with the last stroke going lightly over and off the head. Ask your loved one take a deep breath. To ground your loved one after the massage, place one palm on their lower back and the other on the base of their neck. Rock their hips from side to side for a few seconds. Then be still for a few seconds. Repeat this a few times. This quiet hold, together with gentle rocking motion, brings your loved on back into balance and encourages deep relaxation.

A Few Basic Precautions:

As a general precaution, an untrained person should only massage someone in good health. Do not massage anyone with an acute infection, fever or heart condition.Never massage directly over the spine.Reduce pressure over bony areas.Never work over bruises, open sores, varicose veins, areas of acute pain or inflammation, skin rashes or infections.Aromatherapy oils have potent chemical properties and should be used with care. If you’re pregnant or suffer from any serious illnesses or allergies and are planning on giving or receiving a massage seek advice from an aromatherapist before using essential oils. And remember that these should always be blended with a carrier oil such as Grapeseed, Sweet almond or Olive oil. After receiving a massage, remember to drink lots of water to flush away freed toxins. For acute or chronic pain, seek advice from a professional.

Most dieters will agree… One of the hardest parts of sticking to any healthy eating plan is dealing with cravings. That is, until now. Losing weight has never been easier, with what some are calling the “Imagination Diet.” As it turns out, the key to eliminating the great temptation of a craving is to eat as much of the foods you crave – in your own mental fantasy.

Chocolate News You Can Use

Click to enter our WEBSHOP to buy related products!

At this years Natural Products Expo West, a new line of cocoa-based supplements received a great deal of attention. This is the latest example of a renewed sense of excitement surrounding the health potential of Theobroma cacao extracts and foods. However, not everyone is ready to embrace chocolate as a health food. Some health authorities are hesitant about giving their seal of approval, citing concerns ranging from increased cardiovascular risk to obesity. Who are we to believe? Should we place our faith in supplement manufacturers who suggest a broad array of health benefits or the skeptics that still consider chocolate merely candy?

Whenever you don’t know who to trust in medicine or otherwise, try to examine the evidence upon which the varied assertions are based. In the case of chocolate, I know better than to blindly trust supplement companies that are constantly looking for new and exciting products to develop. At the same time, I’ve heard and read too many nutritionists who disregard genuinely healthy foods and supplements offhandedly for whatever reasons – bias, ignorance, etc. That’s why it’s vital to develop good detective skills of your own and seek out a “brain trust” of people who are in the know who can help you get at the truth.

At the core of cocoa’s current revival are recent studies showing that it benefits the circulatory system. A study set to appear in the June 2011 issue of the journal Physiology & Behavior reports that eating dark chocolate daily improves both cognitive and visual performance. The well designed study involving 30 healthy adults provided either dark chocolate containing 720 mg of cocoa antioxidants (flavanols) or white chocolate (flavanol-free) on separate occasions. The benefits noted by the authors were attributed to increased cerebral and retinal blood flow during the dark chocolate phase of the trial. The way by which cocoa flavanols support healthier circulation may be by: 1) improving endothelial function via the “maintenance of optimal NO (nitric oxide) levels”; 2) inhibiting the activity of ACE or angiotensin-converting enzyme and; 3) protecting against free radical damage in the cardiovascular system. The observations are particularly intriguing when you consider that synthetic ACE inhibitors are typically used to treat congestive heart failure and/or high blood pressure. (1,2,3)

Cholesterol lowering medications are hallmark treatments for the prevention and onset of heart disease in conventional medical practice. Cocoa doesn’t have as profound an effect on lipid levels as statin drugs. However, T. cacao extracts may present a wider range of cardiovascular benefits with a decidedly lower risk of adverse reactions. Numerous trials published in prestigious journals confirm that daily consumption of dark chocolate elevates HDL (“good”) cholesterol while reducing LDL (“bad”) and oxidized cholesterol, improves glycemic control and insulin resistance, and reduces inflammatory markers. And now that researchers are beginning to unravel exactly how cocoa works its “magic”, via “increased sterol regulatory element binding proteins (SREBPs) and activated LDL receptors in HepG2 cells”, even some hard-nosed scientists may finally soften to the possibility that this traditional treat may actually possess medicinal properties. (4,5,6,7,8)

Now let’s move on to the obesity concern expressed by some medical experts. A few little known facts turn this preoccupation on its head. There are certain components of unrefined cocoa that likely discourage weight gain. Current presentations in the Journal of Agricultural Food Chemistry and Planta Medica document a digestive enzyme inhibiting action of cocoa extracts. In practical terms, this means that antioxidants found in cocoa decrease the digestion of select food elements including carbohydrates and fats by suppressing the enzymes a-amylase and lipase. And whereas drugs that do the same may be unsafe, cocoa yields an unquestionably superior safety profile. Also, it’s now been determined that unprocessed cocoa supports the growth of friendly bacteria or probiotics in the digestive system. An emerging theory in the field of weight management is that a greater proportion of healthy bacteria tends to promote better “body weight equilibrium”. (9,10,11,12,13,14,15)

The Relative Antioxidant Activity of Cocoa

Source: Chemistry Central Journal 2011, 5:5 (a)

Two of the biggest reservations about the composition of cocoa have to do with its saturated fat content (mostly stearic acid) and its naturally occurring stimulants (caffeine and theobromine). A new study in the April 2011 edition of the journal Lipids compared the impact of supplementing the diets of 10 healthy women with cocoa butter and olive oil in a crossover fashion. The researchers conducting the trial examined the influence of the two fat sources on C-reactive protein (CRP) and interleukin-6 (IL-6), systemic inflammatory markers. Elevated CRP and/or IL-6 levels have been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Neither of the test fats were found to negatively influence inflammation when given in high dosages (1 gram/kg of body weight/day). It should also be noted that adding cocoa flavanols to meals high in fat tends to offset any fat related circulatory dysfunction. On the stimulant front, current experiments report that although cocoa extracts can reduce fatigue, their natural stimulant content does not increase blood pressure. Both of these observation are ultimately borne out when large scale studies investigate the relative incidence of coronary heart disease (CHD) based on chocolate consumption. The latest, appearing in the April 2011 issue of the journal Clinical Nutrition, determined that those eating 5 or more servings of chocolate a week were 57% less likely to present CHD than infrequent chocolate eaters. (16,17,18,19,20)

There are many different forms of chocolate on the market. As I mentioned in the opening paragraph, some supplement companies now offer concentrated cocoa extracts. This isn’t a bad option. At least when you opt for encapsulated cocoa extracts, you can be reasonably certain that you’ll avoid the added sugar contained in most chocolate bars and drinks. But I personally prefer a much more basic source of chocolate – pure, organic cocoa powder. It’s more economical and it doesn’t strip the fiber content from the end product. Several promising studies in both animal and human subjects reveal that cocoa fiber supports regularity and tends to improve various risk markers associated with cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Most refined chocolate snacks simply can’t be expected to afford that same level of protection. By using pure, non-alkaline (or non-Dutched) cocoa, you’ll get a fair share of antioxidants and a significant helping of dietary fiber. This makes for a truly heart healthy treat that shows no reason to cause any controversy whatsoever. (21,22,23,24,25)

Be well!

How Natural Antibiotics in Asparagus Can Fight Infections

Click to enter our WEBSHOP to buy related products!

This is great information about asparagus from the daily mail in the UK. Once upon a time a received an email about asparagaus and its magic. I will see if I can’t dig it up for you for another blog. Meanwhile, Read on…….

How natural antibiotics in asparagus can fight infections

Several plants used in traditional folk medicine contain powerful natural antibiotics that fight bacterial and fungal infections, a study has found.

Researchers in India tested extracts from the plants on microbes taken from the mouths of oral cancer patients.

Eight had a significant impact on the growth of the organisms in the laboratory.

Natural antibiotics in asparagus can fight infections

Among the most effective bug-busting plants were asparagus, desert date, false daisy, caster oil, and fenugreek.

Cancer patients were used in the study because they often have impaired immune systems, making them vulnerable to infections by  bacteria and fungi.

Of the 40 patients, 35 had compromised immune systems and low white blood cell counts.

Several extracts were effective against a wide range of organisms, including Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus which can cause serious infections in humans.

Scientists hope the herbal remedies might point the way to new treatments for drug-resistant microbes such as the S. aureus ‘superbug’ MRSA.

Study leader Dr Jaya Parkash Yadav, from Maharshi Dayanand University in Rohtak, India, said: ‘Natural medicines are increasingly important in treating disease and traditional knowledge provides a starting point in the search for plant-based medicines.

‘Importantly we found that the extraction process had a huge effect on both the specificity and efficacy of the plant extracts against microbes. Nevertheless several of the plants tested were broad spectrum antibiotics able to combat bacteria including E. coli, S. aureus and the fungi Candida and Aspergillus.

‘Both desert date and caster oil plant were especially able to target bacteria, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which are known to be difficult to treat with conventional antibiotics.’

He added: ‘Although the plants tested had a lower potency than conventional antibiotics they offer hope against resistant species. These results are a starting point for further testing in the lab and clinic.’

The findings are reported in the online journal Annals of Clinical Microbiology and Antimicrobials.

Aromatherapy Oils and the Herpes Virus – a Personal Account

Click to enter our WEBSHOP to buy related products!

If you enjoy this post, please share it using the buttons in the post, or email it to a friend, we'd really appreciate it!

The Herpes virus is a difficult little bug; a so-called ‘incurable’ infection with painful skin lesions. The sores come and go, more frequenly for some individuals than others, and often flollow stressful life conditions where the immune system may be weakened. Allopathic medicine doesn’t yet have a cure for this disease, only pills and creamse that must be used regularly to keep outbreaks from recurring and to lessen their duration. Incurable, painful, sort-of ugly, and with great names like ‘oral-labial’ or ‘genital’, this can be one challenging illness.

This is a personal account – I had herpes outbreaks for several years, and had to deal with painful sores in my mouth and on my lips – sometimes so bad I thought my teeth were falling out! I’ve been through those internal struggles on how to break it to an intimate partner – thankfully their response was never as sever as I expected – hough it still seemed like a big deal to me. I regularly had those telling days of feeling a flu was about to hit, with several days of lesions to follow. What seemed the worst, being an athlete, was that training really hard tended to cause outbreaks almost for certain.

I tried prescription medicines as well as some natural routes. Lysine, a singular amino acid, helped somewhat, but not all the time. I used significant amounts of lip balm, as sun overexposure also tended to cause outbreaks as well. I thought “I’ve got a lot of years left – will I always have to deal with this?”

Then someone introduced me to essential oils, and I learned a little about their studied antiviral activity. I stumbled onto research performed with a certain oil known as Melissa. Melissa essential oil is distilled from Melissa herb, a plant with a long history in natural medicine. The plant yields a relatively small amount of oil compared to other aromatic varieties, so it’s cost seems a little high. But formal investigation has been being going on in Europe for many years applying the oil to herpes lesions, with very promising results. One company has even extracted a component of the oil and sold it in a prescription form (though I have not read of any evidence showing the extract works better than the oil itself).

The most encouraging statement regarding the use of Melissa on herpes was made by Dr. Dietrich Wabner, a professor at the University of Munich: he stated that a single application of Melissa may lead to a complete remission of the disease. A possible cure! I’d figured I had nothing to lose, so I tried a little bottle of the oil.

Searching further, I found a regimine for the oils’ use. Melissa might not lead to a complete remission in just one application – other healers were finding success when the oil was applied to the affected area when an outbreak felt ‘imminent’. The oil was applied perhaps three times per day during the outbreak; this was repeated the next several times the user thought an outbreak may be coming on, and through the duration of the skin healing. My outbreaks were usually on my tongue at that point (though they started on the palate of my mouth). I would get a very fatigued feeling for a few days, then my tongue would get what seemed like individual taste buds that would feel as though they were burnt (and yes, I have had medical confirmation as to their cause). I also had lesions on my lip, but not as often. So I began the Melissa oil program – just one drop in my mouth a few times a day – and thankfully I actually liked the taste!

Aromatherapy Oils and the Herpes Virus A Personal Account

It turns out I wasn’t one of the few with a complete remission occuring with the first application – though I didn’t really expect it. The essential oil did help, however – the outbreaks were shorter and less intense. Then, after perhaps 5-7 times, the outbreaks stopped all together. And life has certainly been no less stressful or physical – perhaps even the opposite! But I’ve had no more oncoming flu symptoms or sores on my lips or in my mouth – even after heavy sun exposure. I can’t remember the last time I’ve had an outbreak now.

For individuals who may have more sensitive skin than I, or have outbreaks in more sensitive places, Melissa essential oil can be diluted in a vegetable or nut oil (Hazelnut oil or Rosehipseed are commonly used) to 1/10th or even less of the total volume and be just as effective (some say that even 1% will work). It is important to note – and repeated many times in the literature – that taking any essential oil orally, or appliying undiluted to the skin, should be done with extreme caution – whatch your own reaction closely and proceed accordingly. I do not have experience with application to the genital variety of Herpes simplex, but the texts do not make a distinction – this may be where a carrier oil could come in handy. But whatever way it’s used, the system should be followed closely: apply Melissa 2-3 times a day to the affected area when an outbreak is on the way, and use it until the sores have healed completely. Follow this method for the next several outbreaks; there are no guarantees, but this may work for you or someone you may know – and what a wonderful thing it can be!

For sufferer’s of Shingles, another Herpes virus variety causing lesions of the skin, Ravensara (Ravensara aromatica, or ‘True’ Ravensara) oil has been used. Individuals have found relief using Ravensara in a 50-50 blend with Tamanu Nut oil. The Tamanu Nut sooths the skin during the healing process and keeps the Ravensara in contact with the sores. I have not heard of this offering a complete cure, but I have heard of this blend really helping relieve discomfort of this condition.

If you decide to try these natural methods, when buying essential oils, buy from a trusted source – Melissa oil particularly has been adulterated due to it’s high cost. The ‘fake’ mixture – a blend of Lemongrass and other essential oils oils – do not contain the same antiviral components. True Melissa is typically found in the range of $10 – $20 per milliliter, with organic varieties costing a little more. There are nearly twenty-five drops in one milliliter, and because only one drop is typically used for each application, a few milliliters (1/4 to 1/8th ounce) can go a long way. If you try this natural healing oil, or to recommend it to those in need, I wish the best of success!
