The End Of Big Pharma’s Dictatorship Could Be In Sight

Recently we told you about the Traditional Herbal Medicinal Products Directive (THMPD) — a new European law that came into effect on 1 May 2011. This draconian legislation makes it almost impossible for a traditional herbal medicine to be licensed in Europe unless it has been used for 30 years in the European Union (EU) – or 15 years in the EU and 15 years elsewhere. According to the THMPD, if a particular remedy has not been used for this amount of time, then it won’t be licensed and it will be illegal to sell! As you can imagine, this is very bad news for the thousands of Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine remedies countless people rely on.

Add to this the harsh restrictions being placed on nutritional supplements and countless other natural remedies, and it’s hardly surprising that the tide is staring to turn… people are not prepared to be dictated to when it comes to their health any longer… especially by those who are even trying to convince us that drinking water doesn’t prevent dehydration (the latest health claim being dismissed!)

There has been a massive backlash both from the public as well as Members of the European Parliament (MEPs). MEPs in particular started asking serious questions about the hundreds of health claims being rejected by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) — a body that currently threatens natural healthcare in the EU.

So far, the EFSA has carried on regardless, but now it looks as if things might change and with a bit of luck and a lot of perseverance our voices may still very well be heard.

Protecting Big Pharma
In the latest development, MEPs have expressed their complete and utter disdain, in no uncertain terms, over the so-called independence of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) — the body entrusted to determine the safety and effectiveness of drugs in the European Union (EU).

In a damning comment of the EMA, MEPs said that there appears to be no proper guarantee of the independence of experts hired to carry out scientific evaluations of pharmaceutical drugs.

Furthermore, MEPs believe that some of the experts involved in evaluating drugs have conflicting interests and that the EMA’s hiring practices are dubious and indicate further conflicts of interest, in particular the way in which they get funding and spend public money.

In short, the EMA are being accused of protecting Big Pharma’s profits by withholding the details and evidence of clinical trials which might otherwise jeopardise drug companies’ profits.

Our regular readers will know that these types of ‘backroom deals’ between medical authorities and Big Pharma are nothing new. However, this is the first time that MEPs have stated, on paper, that the EMA is promoting the interests of Big Pharma in a dishonest manner. The very same interests it is meant to regulate on behalf of Joe Public!

Bringing it all together
Now you may ask how the EMA’s corruption fits in with the EFSA (mentioned earlier)… surely these are two separate entities?

In a way, they are, but at the end of the day they are all tiny parts of a big machine… a machine, which at the moment, is not working in favour of the very people it is supposed to protect and serve.

One can only hope that this latest backlash is a sign of better things to come… and that it will promote greater transparency and fairness.

In the meantime, we still need to make our voices heard. Since 1 May 2011, under the THMPD, the EU blocked has access to many herbal medicines. Some of you may have already noticed that some household remedies are being taken off the shelves.

So far, the European Commission has recognised that the THMPD is needlessly restricting consumer choice. In spite of this admission and questions being asked by MEPs regarding the draconian measures of the THMPD, nothing has yet been done to turn things around.

If we want the THMPD to be amended, we need every man on the streets to stand-up against these stringent laws.

Please sign the following petition, asking the EU Commission to change the directive and to refuse these excessive laws. We also ask that you forward this petition to anyone living in the EU, in order to get 1 million signatures and to help save herbal medicine.

Taraxacum officinale – a member of the Sunflower Family

Of course we all know that Dandelion’s are weeds that pop up in our lawns quite frequently and people go to great lengths to remove them but unbeknownst to most is the fact that this is an amazing herb with great medicinal value. An effective health remedy right in our own backyard!

Recently I have noticed that more of my clients have been testing for and needing this herb to help clear liver congestion.  We unfortunately live in a toxic world and our bodies are paying the price. The good news is that we have herbs to help us out and Dandelion works wonderfully for this.

A European folk remedy since the 15th century, the entire plant was used with wine made from the flowers, salads from the young leaves and the leaves & root used as medicine. It has been said that the dandelion never grows where there are no people, so it is a very sociable plant!

Some of the many ways the dandelion can aid the body:

Liver – A great herb for detoxification, the root is particularly effective for treating build up of toxins in the liver by helping to remove waste products and for aiding a sluggish or congested liver. A general tonic, it may help reduce side effects of medication and as it can help improve bile flow & reduce inflammation, it may be useful for hepatitis and cirrhosis.

Kidneys & Urinary Problems - The leaves are also a tonic for the kidneys, as a diuretic to help stimulate urine flow, improving general kidney function. They also stimulate toxin removal, improving health and assisting with skin problems. The leaves are high in vitamin A and potassium and are useful for water retention, kidney stones, edema, lymphatic swellings and bladder infection. If you have problems with fluid or water retention please consult a natural health practitioner before taking dandelion leaves.

Gallbladder – Both the root and leaf are used as a tonic for the gallbladder & spleen and are often used to prevent gallstones. The leaf can dissolve existing gallstones, but again this should be used with the support of your practitioner. If there is a bile duct obstruction, it should not be used at all.

Digestion – Dandelion Root has an excellent effect on the digestive system. It is stimulating and strengthening and is used as a mild laxative for constipation and also for general poor digestion. It helps to cleanse the digestive tract gently from the effects of meat, excessive fats, fried foods, drugs, coffee, and medication. The leaves help to increase  production of saliva, promoting digestive enzyme & stomach acid production. The roots may help stimulate appetite and aid digestion. With ulcers or gastritis, it should be used with care, due to the overproduction of acids.

Blood Cleanser -  A well-known blood cleanser & detoxifier, dandelion can help with ailments such as rashes, psoriasis, eczema, inflammation, boils, infection, abscesses, chicken pox, measles, painful joints, eyes, skin and fever. As a diuretic, it can help treat high blood pressure, increasing the flow of blood to the tissues and improving circulation, as well as being a blood vessel strengthener and cleanser.

Arthritis & Rheumatism – Another traditional remedy for treating rheumatism and arthritis, due mainly to it’s detoxifying properties

Pregnancy and Lactation -Taken in moderation during the second & third trimesters, dandelion is a useful nutritional aid. It is also a galactagogue, used to promote lactation, increasing milk flow and supporting the breastfeeding process. Discuss with your midwife if you have any concerns.

Nutritional Tonic – With an amazing nutritional value, dandelion is high in vitamins A, B, C and D, plus iron, copper, potassium and higher levels of beta carotene than carrots, plus magnesium, zinc, manganese, choline, silicon, calcium and boron. Older leaves are bitter but the young leaves are great raw or cooked.

External Uses – A well-known remedy for warts, the ‘milk’ from the stem and leaves of fresh dandelion can help with treatment, although this can cause an allergic rash in some individuals. This milk can also be used externally to ease the pain of sores & bee stings and for acne, fungal infections and growths.

Do not use dandelion unless recommended by your health professional if taking insulin, diuretics, lithium or any medication which reduces blood sugar levels

Managing Psoriasis with diet alteration

Psoriasis is a skin condition, rather than a disease. However, it is not contagious, but it can be hereditary. Although there are no exact causes for the condition, it is sometimes an allergic reaction to external influences, including food and environment, and sometimes stress.

One of the first steps to reduce the severity of psoriasis is to drink plenty of water. Thereafter, altering your diet by including plenty of green leafy vegetables can help improve your condition considerably, although this is not a cure. Thereafter, you will have to take treatment with your physician simultaneously.

As there are several treatment methods for psoriasis, diet plays an important part in managing the condition. Foods that are popular triggers for this condition include red wine, red meat, coke, hot spices, junk foods, berries, tomato, oily and acidic foods. In general, people with poor diet have worse cases of psoriasis.

A balanced diet is crucial for overall health. But, certain foods in particular, have specific benefits in managing psoriasis.

It is said that fatty types of fish, including tuna, salmon, herring and sardines, have high omega-3 fatty acid content in them. The healthy fat in these helps fight inflammation. This implies that these could as well be helpful in the case of psoriasis, as this is basically an inflammatory skin condition. Although, there are numerous studies to support this fact, there is no clear cut evidence linking omega-3 to improvement in psoriasis. But, as there is already strong proven evidence about eating fish being good for your heart, you can always give it a try.

Some people with psoriasis have reported worsening of their symptoms when they consume wheat. This could possibly be due to their sensitivity to gluten, a protein found in rye, barley and wheat. According to studies, patients with increased levels of certain antibodies in their blood, also report gluten sensitivity. Therefore, if you have gluten sensitivity and psoriasis, ensuring a gluten-free diet may go a long way in managing your psoriasis symptoms.

In general, food triggers vary from one person to another. But, if you suspect that certain foods make your psoriasis symptoms worse, try getting these foods out of your diet.

The smart food choices in general, are eating more vegetables and fruits, including more of whole grains and olive oil, while limiting saturated fat, trans-fats and added sugar, and refined carbohydrates to promote general health. Combine this with good exercise routine and adequate sleep to combat stress.

Such a routine, apart from fighting infections, can also keep psoriasis symptoms under control, and promote general health.

Other home tips: To reduce stress-triggered psoriasis, turn to meditation and yoga. Acupuncture, though considered safe for psoriasis, it is not known to what extent it actually helps your skin. But, for patients with psoriatic arthritis, acupuncture helps in pain management.

The Chinese herb indigo naturalis is considered effective in treating psoriasis. The powdered herb can be mixed into an ointment and applied to the skin.

Similarly, when Dead Sea salts are applied to a bath, they help remove scales on your skin and reduce itching. Similar results can also be obtained with Epsom salt, but, for best results, soak for 15 minutes.

Aloe vera, when applied directly on the skin, is thought to help in reducing psoriasis plaques. Other natural remedies that can be tried include application of oats, apple cider vinegar and tea tree oil to the skin.

10 Reasons to Start Composting

There is no denying that there is a clear win-win situation that comes from regularly composting the planet’s organic waste. While it may take a little effort to set up your own at-home composting system, the results will be worth it. Composting is an important way that we can give back to the local community and our natural world.

Below I offer some of the many reasons why I think composting is a great technique for the healing of the planet.

A recent estimate from the Environmental Protection Agency predicted that up to one-fourth of all landfill waste could have been thrown into the compost. It’s amazing to think that a quarter of our waste could be turned into nutrient-rich soil. And that leads us to the next reason why we should compost.

Composting organic waste creates an excellent, full-spectrum, nutrient-rich addition that enhances the overall soil quality of our organic gardens and farms. Adding compost to gardening soil can actually boost the production of both edible and ornamental plants.

Composting lowers the amount of warming gases created by organic material in our landfills. The EPA estimates that landfills are the single biggest emitters of toxic methane gases. If everyone composted, methane levels on our planet could be reduced drastically!

Instead of burning yard waste (such as dried leaves, twigs, and branches) many gardeners are turning to compost as an air-friendly alternative. Burning old brush in trash cans may release deadly chemical dioxins into the air, leading to asthma symptoms, allergic reactions and overall toxic air.

Beyond the important micro-nutrients that compost offers, it also acts as a natural, slow-release garden fertilizer and natural pesticide. This also prevents harmful toxic run-off into our waterways.

Adding compost to your soil prevents it from becoming too acidic, or too alkaline. This leads to soil that is usually perfect for the growth of most garden plants.

Compost has the ability to stimulate soil particle clusters, which make for healthy soil structure. When we add compost to soils, we also increase the amount of air pockets and channels between individual soil structures, allowing the soil to hold air, water and important nutrients. This also powerfully aids in the soil’s ability to support root structures of plants, and makes it easier to work with for gardeners.

Adding compost to soil prevents it from eroding. This is an important fact, considering that much of the earth’s soil has been depleted of nutrients. When soil erodes, our water sources become threatened, as polluted, highly pesticide and fertilizer-laden soil turns to run-off into lakes, streams and ponds. Compost increases the soils ability to harbour root systems that prevent this runoff, as well as the overall ability to hold in water. In fact, a 5% increase in organic material (compost) can increase the amount of water absorption capacity by four times.

It is a well known fact that using compost in our soils adds to the diversification and sustainability of many life forms. From birds to bacteria, fungi to insects and worms, composted soil is simply richer in the needed nutrients for Mother Nature’s creatures. What is more, when there are more life-forms living in the soil, plants grow healthier and happier, as the soil becomes more aerated.

Sprinkle a little compost alongside flower beds for a great green-alternative for landscaping.

What natural remedies help with morning sickness?

I am about 9 weeks pregnant and have been hospitalized twice for sever morning sickness/dehydration. They’ve given me some pills to help, but they leave me tired and I can’t get out of bed most days. Are there any natural remedies, such as types of foods, juices, anything, that may help?

The most important thing right now is to stay hydrated. You really don’t want to be dehydrated, so drink as much as possible. Take small sips so as not to overwhelm your stomach. Water can sometimes hurt an empty stomach, so try ginger ale with the bubbles stirred out (carbonation can also hurt your stomach), powerade or gatorade, or juice, if you can manage it.

Other things that might work for you are popsicles or ices, and fruit–a lot of miserably pregnant women find that they CAN eat fruit, so try out different kinds if that appeals at all. For me, I found that I could eat (at different times) strawberries, grapefruit, and thinly sliced golden delicious apples. It was weirdly specific, but it kept me alive!

You might also want to try adding peanut butter to your crackers. Peanut butter has protein, which will make you feel better if you can keep it down.

You should try having very small "meals"–a bite of a cracker here and there when you can stomach it. A lot of people find that keeping crackers or something light next to their bed and taking a few bites before they even get out of bed in the morning. You will feel worse if your stomach is empty, so keeping food in it–even just a little bit–will help stave off the misery.

Hello my friend, It thrills me to receive such a wonderful question. Your dedication to practice must certainly be bearing many fruits in your life, and the ability to quiet the mind at will is surely ripe for the picking as well.

You seem like a perfect candidate to try mantra yoga. I know of no more effective way to discipline the mind and simultaneously create an environment for natural meditation to occur. By your wish to quiet the mind, I assume you intend to create a space for the awareness of your inner self to dawn, undisturbed by your constant stream of mental chatter.

The beauty of mantra meditation, especially for beginners, is that you don't try to quiet the mind, you just focus its powerful energy and drive on something else more productive. The mind is a perpetual machine that processes and digests information gathered from the senses. As long as you're in a body, it will do its job. You can focus it on a mantra, ancient words of power that create a certain circuitry in your brain, nervous system, and at the more subtle levels, your pranic channels. (That's why people traditionally do the yoga postures anyway, to clear the gross physical levels of the pranic channels, so you can experience the more subtle flow through practices such as pranayama and mantra.)

The science of mantra yoga is brilliant! Though I have been practicing for 15 years, offering private coaching and mantra therapy sessions, and teach mantra workshops internationally, I still consider myself a beginning student. The art and science of sound, word, and thought is as infinite as creation, and exploring it parallels the "journey" of awakening. For me, in fact, it's one and the same.

The Sanskrit alphabet (the root language of traditional mantras) is a metaphysical science in itself. Each mantra creates a specific effect along energy channel junctures in the mouth, via placement of the tongue and the subtle change of airflow with different intonations. The pattern of internal and external sound for each mantra creates a unique kind of "esoteric circuitry," which creates a perfect environment for meditation on specific aspects of Divinity. I could go on and on... but for now, here's what I suggest:

For a few minutes at the beginning of your practice, and again for a longer period at the end, start with chanting Om over and over again slowly. Feel the sound start in your belly with the most natural sound of Aaaaaa...then observe the sound moving to your heart as you close your lips in a circle to make Oooooo...then let the sound draw you inward as it slowly disappears through the top of your head as you close your lips and let your tongue rest on the roof of your mouth with Mmmmm. Rest in the breathless silence after the sound for as long as feels comfortable. Let the next inhale arise naturally. On the exhale, let your jaw and tongue relax as you open your mouth to let the next Aaaaa emerge.

At first you can pay attention to where you feel the sound in your body, or the movement of the tongue and the lips. Close your eyes and rest your inner gaze gently between the eyebrows. Chant Om continuously in this manner for 20 minutes per day, and let me know about your results, please!

Much has been written to explain the meaning of Om, but of course nothing can compare with direct revelation. However, to set a course for your pondering, I suggest you focus your attention on the silence from which the sound emerges. Savor the pause at the beginning and end of the cycles of sound, the pause between breaths that is brief yet timeless. THAT is where the fun begins!

The mind may rattle on, but if you cultivate a space for meditation (and again, I know no more effective means than mantra!), you develop a sort of inner momentum that eventually becomes stronger than the outward momentum of the mind and its continual craving for sense objects.

It is okay to be a “newbie” in the world of aromatherapy. There are many people who have never tried it before because they just don’t know where to start, or they are clouded by common myths and misconceptions.

The reality of it is that using essential oils and aromatherapy can help alleviate stress and tension in almost anyone—and it is easy, too. If you do not fully understand the facts about aromatherapy, here are some common misconceptions and the truths.

Aromatherapy is only for people who shun medicine and opt for holistic treatment. The truth: while many people who believe in holistic and natural healing do, in fact, use aromatherapy, just as many people use it who do use traditional medicine. In fact, essential oils are often complimentary to traditional medicines and medical treatment.

You can only use essential oils if they are warmed. Truth: While it is true that essential oils do have a stronger aroma when warm, you can still get their effect when they are not. In fact, you should never heat essential oils over an open flame because it is flammable. You should always follow the direction on any diffuser that you heat and make sure it is supervised at all times.

Some Misconceptions Surrounding Aromatherapy

Essential oils are not safe for children, elderly and pregnant women. Truth: This can be the case, but not always. Some oils will have clearly stated warning labels and you should read and adhere to those very carefully. Some oils, such as lavender have been known to start premature labor when used in excess. If a person is taking certain medications, then caution should be used on some essential oils. The bottom line is that you should always use caution when using essential oils or any type of medication.

You should never use essential oils around pets. The truth: You can use essential oils around pets and in your home. It is okay for your pet to smell the scents. It is not safe however, to massage your pet using essential oils or use it directly on your pet’s skin or fur. This is because they could easily lick their fur and ingest high amounts of the oil, which is not safe for pets or humans. Caution should be use.

Essential oils are expensive. The truth: Yes, some of these types of oils are pricey, however, as with most anything; you have to remember that you get what you pay for. Some of the more expensive oils will be harder to find or will be in a very pure form. You can buy cheaper essential oils, but these may not be the highest quality that you can buy. You can shop around on the Internet or through catalogs to compare prices and try to find the best deal.

Essential oils are not good to use other than for aromatherapy. The truth is that essential oils are great for using around the home. You can use some oils for treatment for skin irritations, head lice, antiseptics when cleaning and disinfectants. Remember, people have been using essential oils for centuries before cleaners and man-made products were on the market.

Lab Tests Find Toxic Heavy Metals in Makeup That Canadian Women Wear Every Day

Lab Tests Find Toxic Heavy Metals in Makeup That Canadian Women Wear Every Day: Environmental Defence calls on Health Canada to improve and regulate impurity limits, and enforce impurities disclosure

TORONTO, May 16 /CNW/ – Cosmetic products that Canadians put on their faces every day have been found to contain toxic heavy metals, such as lead, arsenic, and cadmium, according to a report released today by Environmental Defence. In a lab test of the products in six Canadian women’s makeup bags, each of the 49 products was found to be contaminated with heavy metals and some products contained levels of arsenic and lead that far exceeded the limits recommended by Health Canada. None of the products listed the metals on the labels.

“Canadians deserve to know what is in their cosmetics,” said Dr. Rick Smith, executive director of Environmental Defence. “Given the choice, we think most consumers would not put arsenic or lead on their lips and faces.”

The tests, done by SGS Canada, found that 100% of products tested contained nickel, 96% contained lead, and 90% contained berylliumAt least one of the products tested contained seven of the eight metals of concern (arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury, beryllium, nickel, selenium, and thallium)On average, products contained four of the eight metals of concernThe highest levels of arsenic (70 ppm), cadmium (3 ppm), and lead (110 ppm) were all found in lip glosses, something which could be ingestedThe product containing the highest level of lead was Benefit Benetint lip gloss, at 110ppm, over 10 times higher than the 10ppm limit set out in the Health Canada Draft Guidance on Heavy Metal Impurities in Cosmetics. This same product contained 70ppm of Arsenic, which is over 20 times higher than Health Canada’s recommended limit of 3ppm.

The heavy metals are “impurities” – unintentional contaminants in products – and therefore subject to less regulation and disclosure than intentional ingredients. Health Canada has developed draft guidelines for some metals impurity levels it believes are “technically avoidable” by manufacturers. However, a study of 20 lipsticks conducted by the United States Food and Drug Administration in 2009 showed lead impurity levels averaged 1.07 ppm, where Canada’s current draft guideline for lead impurities is 10 ppm, which is considerably high by comparison.

The products tested largely met Canada’s draft guidelines; however, the guidelines should reflect that lower levels of lead are clearly “technically avoidable”. Moreover, the current draft guidelines only set limits for 5 heavy metals, where our testing found high levels of other heavy metal impurities that do not yet have a draft limit.

“Canada should improve the guidelines on impurities in cosmetics so they better reflect what is truly feasible, then adopt them without delay,” said Smith. “These have been in the draft stage since March 2009.”

“It makes me sick to realize that these chemicals and metals are in the products that I apply to my body,” said Meggin Dueckman, makeup testing volunteer. “I feel that I am a careful consumer, and prefer to do research on personal care products before buying them. I normally read product labels as well. Despite this, the makeup that I have chosen to use all contains ingredients that I would avoid.”

As a group, heavy metals can build up in the body over time and are known to cause varied health problems, which can include: cancer, reproductive and developmental disorders, neurological problems; memory loss; mood swings; nerve, joint and muscle disorders; cardiovascular, skeletal, blood, immune system, kidney and renal problems; headaches; vomiting, nausea, and diarrhea; lung damage; contact dermatitis; and brittle hair and hair loss. Many are suspected hormone disruptors and respiratory toxins, and for some like lead, there is no known safe blood level.

“The concern is not just that heavy metals are in our makeup, but exposure to these toxins through the products we apply to our skin, in the air we breathe, and in our water and food supply can all add up and accumulate in your body,” added Dr. Smith.  “What this means is that we should be striving to achieve the lowest impurity limits possible.”

Some cosmetic companies are moving towards plant-based colorants and away from petroleum or coal tar-based colorants, to avoid product contamination with heavy metals. Others are asking their suppliers to screen for contaminants and source the least contaminated ingredients possible.

Ruby Red Romantic Herb Tea

There is only so much champagne one can drink on Valentine’s Day, but you can indulge in this bright, festive tea all night. And not only is this ruby red hibiscus tea wonderfully romantic (and quite possibly aphrodisiacal) , but hibiscus is a great source of potent antioxidants. Romance and heart-health in one shot!

This is a slightly tart and tasty drink that can be served either iced or hot in your most beautiful glasses or cups before, during or after a meal. Add fresh orange rind spirals or (organic) rose petals to the pitcher as a colorful and zesty decoration. As an exotic alternative, freeze the tea in ice cube trays to add to mixed drinks, sangria, white wine, ginger ale, or fruit punch. Dried hibiscus flowers can be found in the tea section of natural food or gourmet stores, or ordered online.

INGREDIENTS

Ruby Red Romantic Herb Tea

* 4 cups filtered water
* ¼ cup dried red hibiscus flowers
* 2 tablespoons lemongrass or lemon balm
* 2 tablespoons rose hips
* Peel of one organic orange, cut into slices
* Honey, to taste

In a medium-sized saucepan, bring the water to boil, then remove from heat. Add all ingredients except the honey. Cover and allow the mixture to steep for about 45 minutes or until deep red.

Strain, add the honey to taste, and stir to blend. Pour into your best medium-sized clear or cut-glass pitcher, chill for a couple of hours, and serve. Store, refrigerated, covered, for two days.

Pineapple Upside-Down Cake

Ingredients:
1 cups unbleached flour
1 cup sugar
1 tsp baking soda
cup unpacked brown sugar
1 can (20 oz) pineapple chunks in unsweetened pineapple juice
1 cup pineapple juice (drained juice from can of pineapple chunks, add water to make 1 cup)
tsp salt
1 tbsp white vinegar
1/3 cup oil

Instructions:
Preheat oven to 350F.

In large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking soda and salt. In separate bowl, mix together oil, juice and vinegar.

Pineapple Upside Down Cake

Grease 12 spring form pan and add pineapple chunks. Sprinkle with brown sugar. Combine wet ingredients with dry ingredients, stir quickly. Make sure there are no lumps. Pour mixture on top of the pineapple chunks and bake for about 25 35 minutes. The cake should be golden brown on top. If a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean, the cake is ready and should be taken out of the oven.

Once the cake is cooled off, loosen the sides of the cake and carefully remove the side ring. Place a serving plate on top of the cake and flip cake over. Remove spring form bottom.

A Pilates Primer for Beginners

You probably heard about Pilates from friends in the neighborhood or at your local fitness center, but do you know what it is? There are some basic principles and movements that are intrinsically entwined with this exercise phenomenon that makes it totally unique from other forms of physical exercise.

Before jumping into Pilates, you will want to “shop” around for a class or two in your area. Whether a group class or individual instruction, it is all up to you. However, since you are a beginner, you should look exclusively at group classes for beginners or private instruction for beginners.

If intermediate to advance classes are the only ones available, look into checking out some DVDs and books on Pilates to familiarize your self with the exercise and disciplines that make up this fitness program. If you understand the basic exercises and principles, you should be able to move relatively easily into an intermediate group class.

Basics You Should Know

As long as you realize that while Pilates has certain principles you should always recognize, you can adapt some of the movements to your fitness level until you progress. In regards to those principles, there are six basic ones that follow you throughout your work out. They are concentration, focusing within (sometimes called centering), control, precision, breathing and flow of movement and energy.

Understanding the principles helps you with the primary exercises that define the core of Pilates. You have to concentrate and focus on the core muscles of your body, almost like your mind is one with them.

This helps you segue into controlling your movements with exactly precision. Breathing properly allows you to hold the movements and positions and aids in the flow of movement and the feeling of energy coursing through your body.

A Pilates Primer for Beginners

The basic Pilates movements all relate to the core muscles along the trunk of your body – the muscles along the spine, around your hips and pelvic region and abdominal muscles. When you first start, your body will feel stiff and rigid because it is not accustomed to the stretching and movement.

However, as you progress, your body will limber up and become stronger. Your posture improves and your stomach area will be more defined. In other words, your muscles will become sculpted and elongated to create the illusion of length.

These exercises associated with Pilates are low impact, meaning people who have limited mobility could do them such as those with arthritis or general stiffness that comes with aging.

In addition, these moves can be altered a bit to suit your particular infirmities, as they often are when people practice Pilates during injury rehabilitation. In order to do that, you should really learn the basic moves, even if you may not be able to totally follow through yet.

Pilates does involve using some machines as well as the incorporation of mat exercises. If you prefer to get started on your own before finding a class, stick with the mat exercises first and get the basic moves down first. If you can do that, you should be able to tackle the machines in a Pilates class with ease.

This article from BBC news does not surprise me for two reasons. Technology and information is increasing at such a rapid rate. In ten years this will all be old news. There will be even more new therapies. The second reason is because we had a bassett hound that was paralyzed and we got him walking again. He at death’s door, in great pain and on prednisone. We took him to a vet that was amazing. He was placed in an electromagnetic field 16 times over 3 days and when we went to get him he was like a puppy again! He could not walk yet but all the pain was gone and he could scoot around easily. How we got him walking after that using energy healing, is another cool story, (I will blog that later). Paralysed Man Can Stand and Move His Legs Again!

Mr Summers: ”The moment I stood up, I was in disbelief”

A US man who was paralysed from the chest down after being hit by a car is now able to stand with electrical stimulation of his spinal cord.

Rob Summers, from Oregon, said standing on his own was “the most amazing feeling”.

He can voluntarily move his toes, hips, knees and ankles and also walk on a treadmill while being supported, according to research in the Lancet.

However, a UK expert said this should not be interpreted as a cure.

Rob Summers is able to stand while his spinal cord is stimulated

Rob was a keen baseball player and in 2006 was part of the team which won the College World Series.

But in that summer he was injured in a hit and run accident and his spinal cord was damaged.

Messages from the brain, which used to travel down the spinal cord, were blocked and he was paralysed.

Doctors surgically implanted 16 electrodes into his spine.

Rob trained daily in trying to stand, walk and move his legs, while electrical pulses were sent to the spinal cord.

Within days he was able to stand independently and eventually he could control his legs and step, with assistance, for short periods of time.

“None of us believed it,” said Professor Reggie Edgerton, from the University of California. “I was afraid to believe it.”

In most spinal cord injuries only a small amount of the tissue is damaged so many nerve cells remain.

The researchers say these cells pick up signals from the legs and respond automatically. This is what allows a healthy person to stand still or walk without actively thinking about it and it is this process the doctors were trying to tap into.

But after a spinal injury the cells need help, in this case precise electric stimulation.

It mimics a message from the brain to start moving and changes the “mood” of the spinal cord so that it is able to hear the information which is coming in from the legs and respond. Researchers say this, coupled with intensive training, allowed Rob to stand or walk while supported on a treamill.

The researchers admit to having “no idea” about how the brain was also able to gain direct control of the toes, knee and hips.

They speculate that some nerve cells are being reactivated or maybe more of them are being created allowed signals from the brain to pass down the spinal cord.

Rob has also regained other functions such as bladder, bowel and blood pressure control.

He said it had been a “long journey of countless hours of training” which had “completely changed my life”.

He added: “For someone who for four years was unable to even move a toe, to have the freedom and ability to stand on my own is the most amazing feeling.”
